Code Administration

Administration of NANP numbering resources, referred to as code administration, includes the following activities:

  • Assisting potential applicants by providing information about numbering resources.
  • Processing applications for resource assignments in a timely manner.
  • Assigning (or denying) numbering resources in a consistent, neutral manner.
  • Advising regulators and the industry about potential exhaust of the resources.
  • Reclaiming resources no longer needed or improperly used.

NANPA administers numbering resources according to regulatory directives and consensus industry guidelines developed by the Industry Numbering Committee, a committed of the Alliance For Telecommunications Industry Services (ATIS). Descriptions of each NANP numbering resource and associated reports can be found in Numbering Resources.

NANPA assigns resources, with the exception of central office codes, for use within all NANP countries. NANPA assigns central office codes for use only in the U.S. and its territories. For information on applying for central office code assignments in other NANP countries, contact the appropriate organization within that NANP country.

NANPA does not assign individual telephone numbers. To obtain telephone service with an associated telephone number, contact a service provider.

Contact information is available for the administrators responsible for each NANP numbering resource.
